Bumpy wavy plaster
We're in the Uk, have just bought a house that has the worst artex job all over the walls and ceilings. It's really thick artex and isn't easy to sand down, and ontop of that the previous plastering job is extremely uneven as well. We have huge bulges all over the place. We've been asking round for some options on what we could do to level out the walls and somebody has just mentioned putting board over the walls and ceilings which would cover the lethal artex. We've been told that this would be easier than removing all the plastering and then replastering, especially seen as the house is so old that we're not even sure if the wall itself is even! Could you give some suggestions on this, and also advise how we would go about the boarding idea if it turned out to be a good one.
I think the boarding idea is a bad idea. Boards will only follow the contour of what they are nailed to. Nailing over a bumpy, wavy wall will provide a bumpy wavy wall. Also, there isn't much to nail to. Putting a board over the wall would require furring, either metal or wood staightened with a string line (or laser). By the time you are finished you could possibly add 3-4 inches of wall thickness. You probably could have plastered the wall in the same amount of time,
The only practical solution is paint the wall with a chemical bonding agent, like plaster weld. The wall could be then straighted to the highest point.
I know in England there is another brand of paint on plaster bonding agent that is popular. A reputable plastering contractor should be familiar. There is a great Youtube channel, MAC plastering, that may be helpful to you.
Thanks so much for visiting my site.
